The Supernaturalist
Monday, October 25, 2004

Eoin Colfer is a former school teacher who now writes -- nominally -- kids books (including the wonderful Artemis Fowl series one, two and three). His worlds are wacky, his characters a bit over the top, and his plots are twisty, curvy and very satisfying. The Supernaturalist relates the adventures of Cosmo Hill, a orphan who, thanks to a near death experience, can see strange spherical blue creatures that appear to be sucking the life out of suffering humans. Cosmo and his newly found street friends battle the parasites, teams of assault lawyers, the police, the Myishi corporation and thuggish orphanage guards in a plot full of crises and satisfying switch backs. It's easy reading and great fun.
