the Digital Person: Orwell or Kafka
Thursday, June 9, 2005

I recently listened to another excellent IT Conversations interview on my iPod mini. This one was with Dan Solove, an associate profess or law at George Washington University. He argues in his book the Digital Person that it's not Big Brother we should be worried about, it's the crazed bureaucracy of Kafka's the Trial (Terry Gilliam's Brazil should also come immediately to mind). At issue is the structures we have set up to control access to our information -- which are weak at best. Unfortunately, no one with power really cares or understands. So once again we have to ask, we are we going to do about it?
