Little tiny baby Borg

An article in Reuters noted by American Scientist:

New Experiments Unite Chips and Cells

UCLA researchers announced a new method to induce living cells to work as tiny robots aboard a microscopic silicon chip. In an article published on Sunday in the journal Nature Materials , Jianzhong Xi, Jacob Schmidt and Carlo Montemagno described a new technique for attaching living cells to chips. In one experiment they used a rat heart cell to power a device that moved on its own; a second device moved a like a primitive pair of frog legs. The researchers said their technique could one day lead to self-assembling machines.

Very cool.
