Clay Shirkey at Emerging Technology
Monday, April 4, 2005

ITConversations has Clay Shirky's "Ontology is Overrated: Links, Tags, and Post-hoc Metadata" talk from the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. It's really good. Though he conflates classification and categorization, he makes a great case for why we want non-binary groupings (flexible categorization with multiple shades of meaning) and how systems like provide this without requiring semantic pre-analysis. Recommended.
